KEITH GILDART

Professor Keith Gildart, DPhil, has held a number of roles in the higher education sector. Keith was educated at the Universities of Manchester and York, after a career as a coal miner.  For many years he has been a Professor working in the fields of business, labour and social  history, organizational studies, cultural and creative industries and public engagement. He has worked extensively with trade unions, heritage organisations, charities, museums, and community groups. He is an established expert on the history of the British coal industry and its decline, energy policy, industrial relations, labour politics and popular culture. Amongst his many published works are: (with John Benson and James Jaffe), Coal in Victorian Britain (series) (Pickering & Chatto, 2012); Images of England Through Popular Music: Class, Youth and Rock n' Roll, 1955-1976 (Palgrave, 2013); and (with Stephen Catterall), Keeping the Faith: A History of Northern Soul (Manchester University Press, 2020). He is a regular contributor to the media including the BBC and local, national and international press, contributing to popular programmes such as Who Do You Think You Are?
