Aluminium in the Highlands, 1895 – 2000 (2006 - 2009)
This project was jointly funded by Alcan Aluminium UK (subsequently Rio Tinto), the European Social Fund, and Hi-Hopes, with the University of the Highlands and Islands. Led by Professor Perchard, it resulted in a highly successful and well-visited exhibition in Fort William, with accompanying booklet and a film, in November 2007. Professor Perchard subsequently published a highly acclaimed book, Aluminiumville: Government, Global Business and the Scottish Highlands, in 2012. Aluminiumville received widespread acclaim and been highly influential in the aluminium industry, including invitations to speak on the industry’s legacy at the UK House of Lords in 2017.
'On behalf of the people': Work and community in the british coal industry, 1947 - 1994 (2017 - 2021)
Funded by the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council to the tune of £806,000, this project about the history of nationalised British coal was led by Blairmore Associates Professor Keith Gildart and Professor Andrew Perchard, in partnership with the National Mining Museums of England, Scotland and Wales, and collaborating with the Coalfields Regeneration Trust and coalfield communities. This study resulted in a highly successful touring exhibition, public lectures, media appearances and publications. It was also linked to to two other major projects which Professors Gildart and Perchard were involved in leading, one funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council (UK-Japan scheme, 2019-20) and the other the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (2020-27), all totalling income of £2.1m. The design of and collaboration in this project demonstrates an example of co-creation of objectives and project leadership, which was highly successful.
The Voice of UK Aluminium: ALFED at 60 (2021 - 2022)
Funded by the Aluminium Federation (ALFED) to celebrate the Federation’s 60th anniversary, and led by Professor Perchard, working in conjunction with fellow Blairmore Associate Professor Niall MacKenzie, and the Federation, the project produced a cornerstone history of ALFED, with a booklet and exhibition launched at their annual business briefing and dinner in 2022. On back of this Professor Perchard also contributed to the writing of ALFED's Net Zero strategy, Towards Net Zero (2022). Professor Perchard also acted as a strategic advisor to the ALFED CEO.
